Did you know that 24% of the installed capacity of Non-Conventional Renewable Energies (NCRE) in Chile is based on the use of organic waste?<\/p>\n
The National Center for Innovation and Promotion of Sustainable Energies (CIFES) details that as of November 30, 2014, the plants that generated electricity with biomass discarded from forest production totaled 461 MW, while those that are supplied with biogas derived from degradation of organic matter contributed another 43 MW.<\/p>\n
For Katherine Navarrete, CIFES project manager, \"The energy recovery of waste has a high degree of sustainability\" and adds: \"From an economic point of view, it is often more expensive to treat waste than to develop a project that allows it to be used. as energy - and also - relevant environmental and social benefits are generated \u201d.<\/p>\n
The waste that today in Chile is used as a renewable energy source comes mainly from the forestry industry, the agricultural sector and from the organic fraction of municipal solid waste. And the main technologies used are two: the combustion of forest residues with cogeneration of thermal and electrical energy and the anaerobic digestion of organic matter to produce biogas. To date, these are the technologies that have proven to work the best.<\/p>\n
