NCh 382 defines this class of element as a “substance that, due to its chemical action, causes serious injury to living tissues with which it comes into contact, if it escapes, it can cause considerable damage to other goods or to the media. of transports or even destroy them ”. 

Basically, there are two types of corrosives: acids and bases (alkaline), although most have both natures. Acids include hydrochloric, sulfuric, nitric, and acetic. Meanwhile, the most widely used bases are potassium hydroxide (caustic potash) and sodium hydroxide (caustic soda).

The health effects are diverse. They will depend on the compound itself, the exposure time and the access channel. “These substances can enter the body through different routes: inhalation, dermal, digestive and parenteral (such as intravenous, subcutaneous or intramuscular). If the amounts are sufficient to reach a certain dose or exposure that causes health effects, the impacts are acute, delayed or chronic.
