Chile approves Climate Change Law to achieve carbon neutrality and reduce greenhouse gas emissions

The Chilean Congress recently approved and published the Climate Change Law (that has been under discussion since 2020), that makes us the first developing country to have a regulation of this type, becoming pioneers in Latin America.

This project, which will be reviewed every five years, sets the carbon neutrality goal for Chile for the year 2050 and allows the establishing of State policies to face the challenges imposed by climate change, so that the temperature does not increase more than 1.5°C by the end of this century. However, in order to continue advancing, the enactment of Law is expected by the executive branch for its entry into force.

Nevertheless, in addition to the carbon neutrality goal that has been established, the Climate Change Framework Law promotes other management instruments, such as a Long-Term Climate Strategy that defines a carbon budget for specific sectors of the economy, indicating the maximum limit that each of them can emit -and what to do to achieve this - in order to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 2030 and 2050, among other aspects.

Thereby, the Long-Term Climate Strategy pursues to incorporate climate change in the management and planning of all the territories and sectors of the economy in the medium and long term, and in this sense we, at Hidronor, are participants in this goal achievement with the clean energy production from biogas and alternative fuel generation based on calorific value.

We, at Hidronor, contribute to the circular economy and sustainability of Chile with our processes and are part of the new industrial generation that will help us all achieve together the goals established by the Climate Change Law.
