Chile a nivel internacional y en materia ambiental ha abordado firmemente los desafíos globales para lograr un desarrollo sustentable durante la presente década, estimulando la responsabilidad social de las empresas a través de diversos convenios y acuerdos internacionales. El Decreto Supremo No. 685 publicado el 13 de octubre de 1992, ratifica el Convenio de Basilea que regula el control de los movimientos transfronterizos de los desechos peligrosos y su eliminación. Su objetivo es proteger el medio ambiente y la salud humana contra los efectos nocivos derivados de la generación de residuos, el manejo inadecuado de los mismos, los movimientos transfronterizos y la eliminación de residuos peligrosos.
