Recycling or waste recovery rates are on the rise in Chile, even though the figures are insignificant compared to European countries. In this context, Law REP 20,920, which establishes the extended producer responsibility, will encourage this type of practice. These tools make the so-called circular economy possible, which implies redesigning our production system, in which we must take advantage of the highest percentage of waste generated by our production activities in a clean and sustainable way.
Joost Meijer, professional from the Office of Waste and Environmental Risk of the Ministry of the Environment (MMA), highlights the advances that this regulation incorporates to improve the management of industrial waste, placing emphasis on its prevention and recovery. «For this, the REP Law creates new instruments: Ecodesign of priority products such as packaging; certification, labeling and labeling of one or more products; deposit and refund systems; mechanisms of separation at source and selective collection of waste; mechanisms to ensure an environmentally sound management of the same; and mechanisms to prevent their generation ”, he points out.
