Arsenic is a natural element of the earth's crust; widely distributed throughout the environment, it is present in air, water, and land.

Arsenic exists in both organic and inorganic forms. Inorganic arsenic compounds can be found in water and are extremely toxic, while organic arsenic compounds, such as those found in fish and shellfish, are less harmful to health. Arsenic can cause high-risk illnesses, which are caused by inhaling the mineral and prolonged exposure.

Currently in Chile there is no adequate information platform on the baselines regarding arsenic, its location, concentration and accumulation of residues. The community must participate in the decisions made regarding the treatment and disposal of the pollutant, to take actions in defense of its constitutional right to live in a pollution-free environment.
