Chile poses new environmental challenges to improve the country's development in waste management and circular economy issues

During the second quarter of 2020, the Ministry of the Environment highlighted different initiatives that seek to promote a better ecosystem for the near future of Chile. Among them, a new Circular Economy Roadmap con el fin de reducir considerablemente los residuos domiciliarios generados en el país, y un decreto que fija las metas de recolección y valorización de envases y embalajes que viene inmerso dentro de la Ley de Responsabilidad Extendida del Productor (REP), la cual obliga a las empresas a hacerse cargo de los residuos que generan.

In detail, this new Economy Roadmap Circular aims to reduce household waste by 10% by 2040 that today (96%) reach the fillings sanitary, and that, in addition, at least 65% of household waste get recycled.

For its part, the decree that sets recycling goals for companies (REP law) the forces to increase their recycling rates with the installation of 350 new clean points, the formalization of base recyclers and a definitive collection scheme door to door, which will allow the country, in the medium term, obtain figures equivalent to the countries developed.
