The Globally Harmonized System (GHS) or Global Harmonized System (GHS) is an international system that harmonizes the classification and labeling of hazardous chemical substances, developed by the United Nations, which aims at the timely, practical and understandable delivery of information on the defining physical, health, and environmental hazards, based on the properties of the substances that can cause chemicals. The GHS makes it possible to unify the way of labeling and classifying chemicals, so that a single language for the identification of chemicals is spoken worldwide.

This system provides a series of benefits at the global level, government, industry, for workers and consumers in general. Specifically, some of these benefits in the industry are:
• Generation of safer work environments and better communication with employees;
• Higher profitability and lower costs to comply with hazard communication regulations;
Reduction of accidents and occupational diseases

The GHS does not include chemicals regulated through its own laws or regulations, these are:
• Pharmaceutical products.
• Food Additives.
• Cosmetic items.
• Pesticide residues in food.

An Industry Sector Work Plan was developed whose main objective is to “Coordinate and Implement the GHS”.
Chile is in the process of implementing the GHS, which includes informational, training and regulatory development activities. Currently the Ministry of Health is in the dissemination stage to publicize and inform companies of its implications.
