With the aim of supporting the mitigation of climate change and in line with circular economy commitments, Hidronor supports the injection of energy into the public grid to supply at least 700 residences in Chile, among other services. The supply is originated from the use of biogas (composed of greenhouse gases (GHG) as methane and carbon dioxide, produced from organic decomposition), at the Hidronor Copiulemu sanitary landfill located in the Florida county of the Biobío region.

Originally, biogas was captured in this plant and incinerated using flares, following the conventional practice of sanitary landfills. Today, for a change, this fluid is treated and used as a source of energy for a cogeneration engine that produces the electricity which is delivered to the public grid.

In addition, Hidronor valorizes liquid waste with high calorific value to transform into alternative fuel through co-processing. This is mainly marketed with the cement industry that uses it in its kilns replacing fossil fuel combustion which causes the greenhouse effect when burning..

"Hidronor is often seen as a waste disposal company, but in parallel we are always looking for new options to value and dispose of them properly," said Juan Andrés Salamanca, the company's Sales and Marketing Manager.

Likewise, the company remains attentive to the undergoing sectoral regulatory advances as the updating of the Regulation on Hazardous Waste (Supreme Decree 148) and the implementation of EPR that defines the collection and recovery goals for priority products which the company also manages, as containers and packaging, lubricating oils, and batteries.
