According to its definition, corrosive substances are those that can destroy or irreversibly damage other surfaces or substances with which they come into contact. They are considered especially dangerous for living beings, which could be affected in different ways, either through skin burns, inhalation by the gases they inhale or poisoning.

Knowing how to handle this waste correctly is essential to avoid collateral damage that could pose a danger not only to people, but also to the environment.

In this sense, the Registry of Emissions and Transfers of Pollutants (RETC) of the Ministry of the Environment (MMA) estimates that at the national level more than one million tons of hazardous waste are generated annually –among which are corrosive waste– , which are mainly found in areas close to mining and industrial areas.

To regulate its correct handling, Chile requires compliance with the Supreme Decree 148/03, which establishes the analytical procedures for the identification and classification of hazardous waste and the standards for its storage, transportation, reuse and recycling, incineration and final disposal. Thus, the industry ensures responsible management of corrosive waste without negative consequences.

We invite you to know all the details of this regulation here.
