Limnology

Science that studies lakes and ponds, and by extension fresh or continental waters. Limnology deals with all the factors of the still or lenitic waters.

Leaching

Separation of the components of a solid mixture by the action of a suitable solvent.

Leached

Contaminated water dripping from a waste material. Landfill leachate is almost always severely contaminated by organic matter and heavy metals.

Acid rain

Rain containing dissolved acids and therefore acidifying the environment. The most important substances that cause acid rain can travel thousands of kilometers before falling.
