After the fire in the Santa Marta landfill, the increase in household waste and the complexity of its management were put in check.

According to the Ministry of the Environment, around 6,140 tons of waste accumulate in the country's 112 landfills and 38 landfills each year. And of this waste, only 10% is recycled, positioning Chile as one of the countries with the lowest reuse culture in the OECD (Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development).

Despite the fact that waste increases over time, the upward trend is the opposite of that shown by the more economically developed countries. Based on this, the Ministry of the Environment proposes a new national policy for Comprehensive Solid Waste Management, to be presented in April 2016.

This new policy seeks to formalize the culture of recycling in the country, in order to increase the reuse of waste from 10% to 25%. Also, the creation of municipal ordinances of differentiated collection is sought, this means that those who do not comply with the separation of waste in the Clean Points will be sanctioned.

Finally, the idea is also to promote the practice of home composting for organic waste or the use of these as fertilized soil.
