Arsenic: A serious environmental liability

LinkedIn

This element, in its inorganic form, is highly toxic and causes several diseases, including cancer.

Arsenic is a natural element of the Earth's crust that is widely distributed throughout the environment, being present in air, water and land. According to the WHO, its inorganic form is extremely harmful and, when it accumulates in large quantities, it represents a serious danger to health and the ecosystem, causing diseases such as skin lesions, cancers of different types, diabetes, among others.

In Chile, 99% of arsenic emissions generated by point sources correspond to copper smelters, which has caused recurring episodes of contamination in drinking water. For this reason, in November 2023, a new regulation was approved that establishes a maximum arsenic concentration of 23 nanograms per cubic meter as an annual concentration, seeking that companies neutralize the amount of arsenic used in mining, thus protecting the environment and health. of people.

For this reason, and with the aim of continuing to contribute to environmental sustainability, at Hidronor we work to minimize the impact of this type of waste thanks to our industrial and hazardous waste management and treatment services, thereby contributing to the reduction of climate change. We invite all companies to reduce the concentration of arsenic in their processes.
