Waste management is one of the great challenges of the food industry in Chile

The Framework Law for Waste Management, Extended Producer Responsibility and Promotion of Recycling in Chile (Law No. 20,920), also known as the REP Law, requires manufacturers of certain priority products to take charge of the waste derived from their merchandise, what has marked a before and after in various industries. One of them is food, which must be responsible for the packaging waste in which its products come, which implies collecting them and delivering them to an entity that manages them, either by reusing them, recycling them or valuing them energetically.

Experts in product packaging in Chile indicate that one of the first actions has been to identify the type of packaging used by the trade and which of these have a valuation market, either in Chile or abroad. In addition, they indicate that in alliance with the trade union entity of food products and importers, work is being done to identify those materials that could be replaced by others that have a greater ease of recovery and that fulfill the same functionality or are better than the current ones.

Finally, they highlight the importance of having the necessary structure to adequately comply with the regulations of the REP Law, in which the partner companies agreed to start with the creation of a Waste Management System, which may be administered autonomously and Independent.
