Details for a safe and sustainable management for the treatment of contaminated soils

LinkedIn

Currently, our country has 3,363 sites with contaminated soils, the vast majority of which are located in the Antofagasta and Araucanía regions, followed by Tarapacá and Los Ríos. To be precise, Antofagasta has 651 Sites with Potential Presence of Contaminants (SPPC), and 56 of them correspond to Abandoned Soils with Potential Presence of Contaminants (SAPPC) such as hydrocarbons, arsenic, lead, cadmium and mercury.

To face this reality, MMA has made progress in recent years in studies of contamination of soils at the national level, establishing different Policies and Guides to govern SAPPC Management. However, and to despite the fact that at the international level they recognize Chile's effort in improvements in available environmental information, we still have a long way to go travel, since currently there is no existing Framework Law on Soils in our country.

“As a country we have the challenge of strengthening the environmental institutional framework for the creation of a Soil Framework Law that regulate and supervise the SPPC, and this is where joint work is required between the public-private sector in order not to repeat this type of inheritance in generations to come ”, highlights Luis Briones, Development Engineer of Hidronor Chile's businesses.

The good news is that to support the evolution of this panorama and contribute to the sustainability and care of the environment of our country, there are companies, such as Hidronor, dedicated to offer solutions to this problem.

“For more than 15 years that as a company We participate in projects ranging from preliminary stages associated with soil treatment, up to subsequent extraction processes, transportation and treatment of contaminated soils ”, Briones comments. Due to the Hidronor's experience in this area, the company expresses its interest in a safe and sustainable management in the treatment of contaminated soils of the northern part of the country, and supports future sanitation plans.
